One of the most meaningful parts of a trip to France in 2015 was a trip to Vézelay. The town is famous for Vézelay Abbey. The town and its 11th-century Romanesque Basilica of St Magdalene are designated UNESCO World Heritage sites. It’s often overrun with tourists, but we were there on a day when it was almost deserted.
One morning I was the only person in the Abbey nave at 7:30. From the undercroft came the chanting of the brothers and sisters of the Abbey. I was transported.
