In 2015, after deciding to start a new chapter in my life, I moved from West Virginia (“Almost Heaven”) to Wilmington. It turned out to be a good decision. Before retiring, I worked in education and administration for thirty-five years. I have two daughters (Julie and Amy) and two granddaughters (Alexandra and Madison).
I came to the Episcopal church later in life. My granddaughter and I were confirmed together. After growing up in a Baptist church, I was drawn to the liturgy and traditional aspects of worship. Along with the respect for traditions, there was a variety of backgrounds, viewpoints, and an openness to questions and new insights. After visiting other local churches, I found St. Paul’s to be the most welcoming and friendly, a place to come as you are. Additionally, the music was beautiful.
At St. John’s Episcopal Church in Huntington, WV ,and here at St. Paul’s, I have served as a Sunday school teacher and director, lead teacher for a church organized summer reading camp for young children struggling with reading skills, on altar guild, greeter, hospitality, St. Agnes Guild fund raising coordinator, and participated in the Singles on Sunday women’s group. Along with purpose, these were ways to connect and develop relationships with church family.
My social activities have revolved around the numerous opportunities provided through the Wilmington Newcomers Club and the Coastal Carolina Women’s Club, where I have served as a board member for both groups. These groups offered a wonderful way to make new friends and participate in a variety of activities. My newly found “skills” include pickleball and Mahjong.
